power imbalance, dark romance elements
Rhapsodic follows Callypso Lillis, a siren living in the modern world who survives by making magical bargains with people in desperate situations. Years earlier, she made a deal of her own with the Bargainer, a powerful and enigmatic fae who collects debts in the form of black beads worn around the wrist. When the Bargainer returns to claim what he is owed, Callie is drawn back into the dangerous fae realm and forced to confront her past choices, long buried secrets, and the complicated connection she shares with him.
I was intrigued by the concept of magical bargains and the way they shaped the story. The idea of debts, consequences, and long term obligation added an interesting layer to the romance and made the relationship between Callie and the Bargainer feel more complex than a standard fantasy pairing.
The atmosphere of the book stood out to me as well. The fae world, the tension surrounding the bargains, and the sense that everything happening in the present was tied to choices made years earlier gave the story a darker, more mysterious tone that worked well.
While I enjoyed the concept and overall atmosphere, parts of the story didn’t stick with me as strongly as I expected. The pacing occasionally felt uneven, especially with the shifts between past and present, and I found myself more invested in the core premise than some of the smaller plot beats.
Rhapsodic is an engaging dark fantasy romance with a unique premise and a strong sense of atmosphere. While it may not be the most memorable book I’ve read in the genre, it was still an enjoyable experience and a solid introduction to the series. Readers who enjoy slow burn romance, fae mythology, and stories centered around bargains and long term consequences will likely find this worth picking up.
