abusive relationship, emotional trauma
It Starts With Us continues Lily Bloom’s story as she focuses on healing and rebuilding her life after leaving an abusive relationship. The novel explores her renewed connection with Atlas Corrigan while navigating co-parenting, emotional growth, and the long-term impact of trauma. Told from alternating perspectives, the story emphasizes communication, safety, and the idea that love can be healthy, steady, and supportive.
I really enjoyed this book and the message it carried. I liked how clearly it showed that it is possible to leave an abusive relationship and still find happiness and love afterward. The story focuses on healing rather than drama, which made it feel hopeful and reassuring.
I especially loved that Lily and Atlas were able to reconnect and get a second chance at a relationship now that they are older and more emotionally mature. Their dynamic felt healthier and more grounded compared to their past, and it was nice to see a relationship built on mutual respect, understanding, and communication rather than chaos.
Seeing Lily grow into herself and choose peace over survival made the story feel meaningful rather than just romantic.
At times, the story felt slower and more reflective than dramatic, which may not work for every reader. The focus on healing and communication meant there were fewer high intensity moments, and some parts felt more like emotional closure than active storytelling.
While I appreciated the calm tone overall, it occasionally made the pacing feel a bit drawn out.
It Starts With Us was a comforting and emotionally satisfying read that focused on healing, growth, and healthy love. I enjoyed seeing Lily move forward and watching her relationship with Atlas develop in a way that felt safe and realistic. If you’re looking for a story about second chances, emotional maturity, and love after trauma, this book is worth picking up.
